The Paediatric Fund supports the work of the Paediatric Oncology Clinic, which is based on Bramble Unit at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford), Exeter. Here, children from Exeter and Torbay Health Areas are treated for cancer and leukaemia. Fortunately these are rare conditions, but between 15-25 children are diagnosed each year ranging in age from a few months to late teenage. The majority of children can be cured of their disease with drugs (chemotherapy), radiotherapy or surgery. Most last between a few months and 3 years.
The Paediatric Oncology Fund is used specifically for the Paediatric Oncology service to facilitate treatment and enhance quality of life for the patients and their families.
Over the last financial year a total of over £18,000 was paid out from the fund and of this over £16,000 went to help families directly.
Some examples of the help given are:-
- Transport issues – a major concern for families from rural areas. Help has been given towards car repairs, car purchase, driving lessons and we fund a taxi account for journeys at short notice when hospital cars cannot be used.
- Crisis breaks – crucial for families under pressure. The fund enables week-ends or longer to be booked at short notice to fit around treatment.
- Passes for days out – Paignton Zoo and Woodlands – so families can have a break even if their child can only manage a short visit.
- Help to fund a residential weekend for patients, siblings and bereaved siblings.
- Crisis grants – family’s finances are severely affected by the demands of treatment and statutory benefits do not cover the first 3 months. Help is given in exceptional cases to ensure families can meet the demands of treatment.
- Help towards the purchase of computers to young people can use them for schoolwork and keep in touch with friends.
- Help with staff training, purchase of books for staff, schools and patients.
